A Purpose to All

by Carolyn Chilton Casas

To everything turn, turn, turn

There is a season turn, turn, turn

And a time to every purpose under heaven.

“To Everything There is a Season” by Peter Seeger

We forget this—

everything that happens

has a purpose.

Even the scarred past

that we pick at in an effort

to obliterate its existence.

We may be criticized

for our fragile choices,

and yet we know on some level

what was necessary

for our evolution.

The luminous stitching

that binds together

calamity and good fortune

to make a much-worn garment,

one that fits us better

than any other

and fulfills our unique destiny.

This, too, is fullness—

what at first was labeled a failure

but with introspection, we recognize

served us more than we could

ever have imagined.
