is burning in my lungs,
Sharp like the corrosive sting of acid,
Caustic through
my respiratory
canals
I’m suppressing the urge to lift my head upward
Cough out the freshwater
It fills up my lungs like gasoline
Sweet gasoline
Burns like vodka
Through my trachea
Everything around me is midnight blue, edged with
Thumping throbbing crimson
Encroaching further & further
onto the edges of my vision
My hair snakes around me like dancing reeds
Slow drifting
I’m sinking lower
I still feel his touch even after
I tried to scrub my skin raw
The freshwater’s all that can
Purge him from me
Water dissolves the lye
Separates it from my throat
The red pounds pounds pounds
as midnight darkens around me
I’m dancing below the surface & my body is
Mine mine mine
No one will ever have it
Again again again
It’s all mine mine mine, drinking freshwater
