Threnody for a Pig’s Eye (Hemlock or The Pill You Take Before Conception)

by Jordan Veres

No one really cares

And nobody ever knows.

I’m afraid that’s the way

Blurred close-up of a person lying down, eyes closed. Dark hair strands prominent. Monochrome tone creates a calm, introspective mood.

The story always goes.

Come what not

And come what may

Betwixt the grass and the hay

Life only wants us

To get out of its way.

Dissolute and dispossessed,

I am the father of dishonor

And unearned happiness.

Don’t ever find yourself

Asking why

For you will soon

Be reposited

In a trunk or a sty.

Threnody for a pig’s eye?

You must already be,

Or have always been,

Around the bend

The reality of which

You are quick to deny.
