Being Me
by Thomas Redoubt

Being me,
I wake each morning
as the birds do,
flitting from branch to branch,
singing, preening, looking this way and that,
listening for answers to my calls,
seeing yesterday's world for the first time again.
Being me,
I surround myself
as a child does,
with things that make me happiest,
my toys, my friends, my fantasies,
all those things that trumpet how special I am,
playing at being grown up as a game I always win.
Being me,
I radiate ceaselessly
as the sun does,
sending out light and heat in all directions,
blowing my solar wind across the universe,
directing the casting of shadows,
enjoying being the center of everything.
Being me
never gets boring,
except when it does
and when that happens
I just pretend it's morning again
and the birds are about to sing.
